originally announced years ago. I thought I'd do a general post about
them - note that this is for information only - I don't have any

pre-ordered). Starting with some of the larger recent releases to set
the stage or you can skip to the Pre-Orders below.

Mattel Creations Shogun Masters Skeletor (and variants) - RELEASED

I
thought this a bold move by Mattel Creations - I would have never
expected this small direct-market Mattel subsidiary of marketing a
Shogun Warriors-sized anything other than a Barbie. Seems the MOTU line
is doing better than I expected. The figure is based more on the
stylized 2021 series but more so with simplified profiles (ironically it
reminds me of Funko Pop figures). Besides the base figure there are two
variants, bot cased in black plastic: Golden Havoc (black with gold
trim paint) and Dark Malice (all black with a couple spots of silver)

I
originally only wanted the base figure but then decided to buy the Dark
Malice variant - hard to turn down something that's limited to 250
pieces. These shipped May 2021 and are now only available in the
aftermarket.

Super 7 Super Shogun Optimus Prime (Fallen Leader) - RELEASED

This

were rumors that Skeletor was setting the stage for a matching He-Man

A few things have happened - in early 2019 I was laid off from my fairly high-paying position working for an agency's software development division - I decided to take some time off and really didn't worry too much about another job, did some traveling, etc thinking I would find something casually, however then the pandemic hit which really put all brakes on my toy spending. Last year during the pandemic was pretty rough - frankly I had updates ready to go for Shogunwarriors.org but I wasn't much inclined to do them. The pandemic had two effects on me - the first was that it put a stop to most Japan Post shipments to the US and the second was that a fairly expensive toy was held up for shipment until recently (16 months later) but I finally received it. The first impact, combined with a lack of funds due to no-job, curtailed my desire to search for anything coming to market in Japan. Not that this totally precluded my spending but it did put a stop to 95% of it.

Since my last post I've acquired a few things which I'll be adding to sw.org shortly. In the meanwhile, here's a new page regarding Mattel Creations jumping into Jumbo Machinder land via the addition of a Masters of the Universe Skeletor figure..

Mattel Creations

More to come...

-- John

John Eatonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00040215463441470962noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2257558368478470871.post-24162266615164097442020-06-04T11:40:00.000-04:002020-06-04T11:40:09.119-04:00Site Updates - New Takatoku Landing page and Daikengo Page

Had some time today and added a new Takatoku landing page with links to the existing Big Dai X and a new Daikengo page - enjoy!

-- John

John Eatonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00040215463441470962noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2257558368478470871.post-27644716559234947462020-05-31T11:50:00.005-04:002020-06-01T11:16:04.207-04:00Combattler V vs Combatra

I got into a conversation with a local collector interested in putting together a Combattra figure. For the Shogun Warrior fan this would either be the 5 separate Shogun Vehicles that make up the figure or the acquisition of the Shogun Combatra Deluxe set. I know through experience that some of the parts between the versions aren't interchangeable - the biggest differences are between the original Popy vs the Shogun Warrior and GoDaiKin bits as there are design differences - for instance, the Popy shooting fits have a flat cross section while the later has a "+" cross-section, meaning that the later fists won't work in the earlier Popy without modification. I turned to Combattler-collector extraordinaire John Olson as he's had more of these than just about anyone I know. He provided all the comparison photos that follow (some notes are added by me):

Popy PA-78 - note there are small paint and sticker variations (the "ear" pods are a darker blue on the Popy and GoDaiKin). I finally completed a set of Shogun Combatra Vehicle chip-boxes - this has literally taken years. The first I found was the Battle Tank and then I lucked out on a set of 4/5 of the rest (so I have a duplicate of the Tank now). The Battle Clasher was the last for me to finish out the set. I still need to take some photos and document the deluxe Combatra set - which is interesting itself as it's basically a big box that holds all 5 styrofoam inserts in a cardboard insert but comes with some extra bits like the strap that holds the figure together.

So here are links to all five - you can also see them as sub-menu items off the main navigational menu:

Original Tetsujin 28 Sticker Sheet

I've had a few people ask me about replacement stickers so I thought I would cover those. All Shogun Warrior toys came with the stickers pre-applied. Some of the Popy (and other Japanese-produced) Jumbo Machinders came with some stickers applied and sometimes with a sticker sheet of additional stickers, like the T28 sheet at the top of this page. Back in the day there were a group of files that were freely shared by collectors on the MachinderShop Yahoo group so you could dress-up your Shoguns or Popy toys with varying results. If you can find a set of those (and no, I don't have them) you could simply print out the images at 100% on a color printer (preferably on a "sticker sheet"), cut them out and apply them. Your experience will vary, mostly due to the quality of your printer and your ability to apply the new stickers over the old or where they are missing. There are some down-sides to this method though. First, stickers that were originally printed on metallic backgrounds don't look quite right. Second, if your printer is crappy, you'll often end up with pixelated images that look crappy. At some point, the images were improved (the first to appear had low-res bitmap files or JPGs that appeared a bit pixelated) most if not all of them were redrawn at some point using a vector program like Freehand or Illustrator - if you have those programs you will want to look for the vector files as the output is the best and they can be resized. Your best bet if you don't have a decent printer or the software is to just buy what you need and fortunately there are a few sources.

For the most part, those selling replacement stickers are color matching very closely to the original stickers - also the materials are better, often printed n vinyl that has a bit of gloss rather than on matte paper. Even the grays used for silver-metallic looks pretty decent once it's glossed-up a bit.
kitser
Kitser is the old username for Hong Kong native Yim Shyh Jye on the Robot-Japan boards, who has created various sticker sets, primarily for Popy and other Japanese releases. The quality is quite good (I ordered a set of Ultraman Taro stickers from him) - he also has access to some rare Popy reproduction parts. Find him on forums or on Facebook.

What's in a Fist?

When I first started collecting Shogun Warriors it quickly became apparent that there were different versions of the Godzilla figure - I first obtained a loose 2nd issue with a broken lever ($20 but he had his firing first and was otherwise in good shape - got him at a yard sale). Some time went past and I picked up a boxed 1st Issue at a toy show for $65 - the figure was basically minty and other than the color I didn't think too much about him being different - it wasn't until someone pointed out the plugs in the head and the "Made in Japan" on the feet that I realized that it was very different - the box was in decent shape but was a later "Made in US" version. I've had many discussions about this with Sean Linkenback who opined that the figure was probably switched (something easy to do with these as the packaging wasn't sealed) but I was skeptical - having messed with toys for years I knew that there were many running changes in toys that would create weird combinations as the changes were incorporated during the manufacture and packaging process. The further cement my doubt, I bought a second boxed Godzilla, this time from someone who had it since he was a child and once again, first issue figure in a 2nd issue box.

It wasn't until a few years ago that in talking to Sean that he mentioned that there was a box version with "20" Tall" instead of the usual "19 1/2" Tall" and that's when I spent more attention to Godzilla, first in finding the box variant and next in looking at all the differences between the two. Now that I have a box I realize that the first issue Godzilla was actually manufactured by Bandai in Japan - call it the actual first Bandai Godzilla, since it predates the toys Bandai distributed later and is actually marked (the Jumbozaurus was created by Popy and while a Bandai subsidiary, not marked "Bandai"). I managed to score a Canadian boxed version with "20" Tall" in dual language (English and French). This version also does NOT have the suffix printers' codes indicating a new art version (like the running changes on the other Shogun Warrior boxes) - my thought is that it's the true first issue and that it probably preceded the US 1st Issue 20" box by a few months. (I have a 20" variant box WITH printers codes as a US edition which I think was printed a short time later).

Comparing the boxes is fun but more so to compare the figures - besides the color differences the feet/toes are unusual as the Bandai version has both "Made in Japan" and has reinforcements so weights could be put into the legs - the US version lacks both those details. There's more definition to the 1st Issue Godzilla paint - looks like Bandai first sprayed an underlayment of white before applying color to really make the colors standout - the US foregoes that treatment. Finally, the lever on the Bandai version is made with a darker red plastic. At this point I only knew about the two versions and the "smooth pickle" which is only found in the earlier brighter plastic - this is a reference to the smooth tail which lacks the bumps for the fins - I believe that's the earlier version.

Godzilla Fists Comparison - First Issue Right

Which brings us to the discussion on fists - neither Sean nor I had ever seen the smaller shooting fist - I think I read about it online a few years ago but hadn't seen a photo until someone posted it. I acquired one last year - it's a smaller cast fist that has a straight thumb. I'm not sure why this was changed but maybe the thought was that it didn't look enough like a fist? It's an odd detail - I've only seen 2-3 of these thus far (and I've owned a couple of dozen and review photos all the time). I think it makes for a better match to his left fist - but maybe the point was to make it big enough that it won't shoot as far and won't hit with as much impact? Not sure why but there you go.

I managed to update the styling for most of the website, also added new navigational elements including a landing page for Mandarake and separated Toynami from Super 7 landing pages. I also added nested menus to make it easier to find pages.

Mandarake Page

Funko/Super 7

Toynami

I'll have new materials shortly but in the meanwhile, let me know if you see any kinks - I know there are still issues with the secondary navigation in mobile devices.

Been a while since I've posted - basically I've been buried in work. One of the things I hated about the previous site design was a lack of responsive UI control - when you looked at the site via mobile device you lost all the navigational elements. I finally found a template that does a good job with this issue by placing the navigation in a "hamburger" menu that drops down in Mobile. Of course now I have to update all the styles to get them looking right but I think this is an improvement over what I had before.

What do you think?

It's pretty obvious that Raideen's fists were recast from Mach Baron's - I decided to do a comparison when some people commented about using a right Raideen fist painted red, sans shield as a replacement. I've decided to make molds of the two fists and took some photos prior to removing the stickers from y Mach Baron (they were in bad shape - ordered a new set from kitser).

The first thing I noticed is that the mold only closely matches the riveted version of the Raideen fist - so it's my assumption that this is the first issue, first version. The later screwed version of the fist is a different mold.

Popy appears to have taken the Mach Baron fist and modified it slightly - adding the band near the opening, the studs to the knuckles and the back plate for the shield. There's a bit of detail lost in the fist from the recast (most manufacturers would take a cast from the original and rework it for a new master - that appears to have been done with this).

On Raideen's shield fist, compared to the screwed version the riveted version is a bit smaller and a match for Mach Baron, while the screwed version is larger.

It's farily obvious that the fist has been reworked - it may be from a different figure - the cuff is the same. Most likely the fist was made a bit larger to compensate for an unbalanced appearance - note the thumb and fingers are larger. The fist is also a bit thicker.

You can see the differences from the shield side - different proportions and lack of screws - the rivet is hidden by the sticker on the original. I'm wondering if this was to make it easier to manufacture or if there was another concern?

I've had a chance recently to look at box details and would like to share what I've found.

Popy Boxes (lids)

The Popy box lids (with the exception of the Robot Factory toys which were shipped in thinner boxes that opened on the ends) are all made the same way, with the end-flaps extended (generally printed with the same image that's covered by the sides or just printed black if that's the predominant end-color), glued to the sides so they'll still fold-down flat. Those diagonal creases you see on the sides are so that the boxes can be made/printed and stored flat until the toy is added. Some notes:

The first figure produced has "No. 2600" on the lid at the top - this is/was presumably the stock number.

For some reason the next group of Jumbo Machinders all share the same "No. 2850" on the lid. Also, each of the five had numbering (I'm guessing the idea was to prompt kids into buying the whole series) - I don't believe they numbering continued though - note that this is also why Uni-Five numbered their Jumbo Machinders, to emulate the original Popy scheme. This includes: Mazinger Z (#1), Kamen Rider V3 (#2), Ultraman Taro (#3), Red Baron (#4) and Kamen Rider X (#5) - all were released in 1973 culminating in Great Mazinger (but for some reason his box lacks the numbering)

The sides of all the long boxes are printed right-side up when laying the box on its back (so you can read it when the box is flat, lid up).

The ends are typically identical while the sides can be custom.

Early boxes contain an accessory booklet having prototype illustrations of the XX accessories instead the production toy (XX-2 is particularly weird, looking like a fist with a giant light-up finger).

Popy Boxes (bottoms)

The initial release boxes have a yellow pigment added to the interior (presumably to the cardboard insert also). There are also some physical properties that are different:

Yellow pigment

Ends have the flap extended from the sides and then they are stapled flush top-and-bottom (which adds some reinforcement to the overall box and prevents the pointy heads and wheels from busting through during transport). These are also stapled along the edges which may be why they stopped making them this way, as it increased assembly time.

This seems to be the same box bottom used for the entire No. 2850 run (which includes the first five boxed Jumbo Machinders.

When Popy started marketing more Jumbos, they went to the more conventional style bottom where the ends extend and are glued to the sides.

Note that the cardboard corrugations run side-to-side in orientation to the length (perpendicular)

Mattel Boxes (lids and bottoms)

In general all of the Mattel boxes are made consistently with with the later Popy boxes with a few exceptions:

The first two-four Mattel Godzilla boxes were printed by Bandai (they are easy to spot because they have "20 INCHES TALL" printed on the front. There's an original release box and a later release box with a printers code - there are also Canadian versions of at least the first box (no printers code) that has French language.

These Bandai boxes are put together the same way as the later Popy boxes - especially the bottoms (they have longer flaps)

Later Edition Godzilla boxes (there are at least two variants - the regular and the "bloody claw" version) have a differently constructed box bottom, with the cardboard for the ends extending and lapping over extended side pieces to create a triple-reinforcement (the weight of Godzilla must have caused issues in shipping).

Note that of all the Shogun Warriors boxes Godzilla has the end nearest his head printed upside-down (when laying flat with the lid up the head-end is upside down).

When Mattel makes a change to the text they will add a printers code - the stock number followed by a number string, to identify that the printing is different.
