Mattel Catalog 1979

1979 continues the popular Shogun Warriors toyline with several new offerings.

79 Mattel Catalog Cover

First, while some would argue that these aren't Shogun Warriors, I've included the first appearance of Godzilla's Gang - this interesting collection of partially articulated hard-plastic toys, with the exception of Godzilla, is mostly borrowed from Ultraman.

Page 52 continues with a layer cake with the Collector's line at the top, the 5-inch line and an all new Two-in-One line.
COLLECTOR'S SHOGUN WARRIORS
"Invincible Guardians in miniature! Shogun(R) stalwarts 3 inches tall. All have die-cast metal parts, arms that move." What's interesting is that the line has been expanded from the original six to a full ten with the addition of:

#2994Voltus V
#2995 Dangard
#2996 Leopardon
#2997 "17"
Yet even with the expanded line the assortment has the same count/weight. They apparently just give you fewer of each to make room for the additions.

79 Mattel Catalog pg 65

On page 65 the Godzilla game gains a new companion (assuming that the previous Groop Loop was a failure) with the addition of the Slime (TM) Monster Game - I think this was right around the time that Slime started to become all the rage.

GODZILLA GAME
"Who will survive the mighty monster's attack? Be the only spaceship not caught and you win the game! Watch out! Godzilla springs to attack. Zap! Another spacecraft is lost! The action board game of suspense and impending disaster. Includes 24 space ships. No assembly required."

2-4 players.

79 Mattel Catalog pg 90
And finally on page 90 we get the Shogun Rocket Top. I'm not quite sure why Mattel went with these - they certainly don't quite "fit in" to the rest of the Shogun Warrior line and frankly look more like a product normally licensed to another, less expensive company. The tops work by twisting the head on the body of a robot and then clicking a button beneath the feet while holding the robot sideways - the head releases and spins much like those automatic tops made in the 50s-60s - certainly not as exciting as the Wiz-z-zers of previous years. The photo shows a blue-bodied robot with black head and an all red robot - I've never seen either of those two and own several packaged examples. The most common is blue-with-red head, the least common red-with-black head.
Shogun Rocket Tops
Above the catalog image:
#2739 SHOGUN Rocket Tops

"These particular Shogun (TM) warriors literally lose their heads for the cause of fun and games! You just wind the head three times round. Release it vertically, it spins on smooth solid surface. Launch by pushing the button in the bottom of the feet. And it's off with their heads! Outdoor fun for everyone over 5. Package is 4-color blister pak." (note that I've only seen these on header cards like shown above or as part of a counter box)
