LJN Voltron Giant Commander

This was the large LJN release of Go Lion in the US marketed as Voltron Giant Commander. Basically a recast of the original Popy jumbo machinder, LJN changed the embossed copyright and logos on the back and removed the missile firing mechanism in each hand (opening the hinged-jaw on the cats pushed a button releasing the missiles in the Popy version). Also missing are the missile banks on each leg (with green/white and red/white missiles to match the cats). Instead you get a fairly lame wired-remote control base that can screwed on the feet of the figure so you can roll-him around. Also included is a scaled up flame sword - something the Popy edition never had.

This figure came in a huge box - the example I have was removed from the box and the base was screwed into the feet - but it appears to have not been used as there is no scuffing and the sword is still attached to the insert. Also the two sticker sheets are still intact and what sheets! So many stickers! When I bought mine it cost me $30 whole bucks at a toy show - I think the guy was just tired of carrying it around, it's quite a huge box and a bit fragile. It was also a very common toy back in the 90's and early 2000s.

With so many Voltron collectors out there this fairly common figure has started to become a bit scarce, especially with the revived Netflix series. I'm still looking for an original Popy version and have been thinking about finding a loose figure to modify with missiles and banks. One thing, if you don't use the base make sure you weight the legs as it will help stabilize the figure when posed, especially with arms out and blazing sword raised high!
