#1036 Shogun Warriors Coloring Book Starring Great Mazinga"Space Pirates"

This coloring book was produced by Whitman and from the Copyrights, sometime in 1978. It's a bit confusing as the information on the cover doesn't quite match the information on the inside title page. The cover lists "Space Pirates" but the insides say "The U.F.O. Invasion (Unidentified Flying Ogres)"

Text on the cover:
  • Shogun Warriors "Invincible guardians of world freedom!" logo
  • Coloring Book Starring Great Mazinga
  • (c) Dynamic Production, Toei Doga 1978
  • "Space Pirates"
  • (c) Mattel, inc 1978
  • SHOGUN is a U.S. trademark of Mattel, Inc. used under license.
  • Great Mazinga is a trademark of Bandai used under license.

The Whitman coloring books are interesting because the license has both Mattel and the original Japanese copyright owners. The illustrations are of the toy and not the original characters so they have toy features (like missile banks on the legs and missile firing accessories). These comics were illustrated by the late cartoonist, Owen McCarron, whose work appeared for decades in the Halifax Chronicle-Herald and  in U.S. publisher Marvel Comics (for the latter, especially in licensed comic-related publications like coloring books). There are 60 pages that include images that can be colored - the renderings of this issue are a bit primitive but includes pirates, gems, Mazinga and a giant spider.

Man, I haven't seen this in years! I had this coloring book as a kid circa 1980 and it's always occupied a corner of my memory alongside the Mattel combat vehicles that I also had around that time. Those were some great toys!
